Proximity is a heavy ranking signal, and you are almost certainly searching from at or near your own address — the single location where you are most likely to rank highest. It is the least representative sample available.

Search history and account signals shape what you are shown. Incognito removes some of that, but it does not move you somewhere else, which is the distortion that matters most here.

Why can't I just search Google Maps myself to check my ranking?+
You can, but the result will mislead you. Google personalises what you see based on your location, your search history and your signed-in account, and you are almost always searching from near your own business — the one place you are most likely to rank well. An incognito window fixes the history, not the location.
What does the rank checker actually do?+
It queries Google Maps for your keyword as though the searcher were standing at each point on a grid you define, then records the position your business came back at for every one of those points. The output is a map, not a number.
What is a good result?+
Depends on what you sell and how far people will travel for it. As a rough read: green across the area you serve is strong, green near the pin fading to amber a few miles out is normal and improvable, and red at points where you would happily take the job is the gap worth working on.
Is a one-off check enough?+
