Local rank tracker

Local rank tracker

In local search, position depends on where the searcher is standing. Maprank tracks your rank across the whole area you serve — every neighbourhood, on one map — instead of reporting a single national number that does not exist.

The local difference

Your market is a territory, not a keyword

Local ranking is geographic. Measuring it with a tool designed for national SEO throws away the dimension that decides whether the phone rings.

Rank decays with distance

You will almost always rank best closest to your pin and worse as the searcher moves away. The useful question is how quickly that decay happens and in which direction — that is the edge of your practical market.

The edge is where the money is

Moving from #1 to #1 at your own address changes nothing. Moving from #7 to #3 four miles out adds a whole neighbourhood of searches you were invisible for. Grid tracking is what makes that visible.

Competitors hold ground, not positions

In a local market you are not competing with one ranking. You are competing for areas. Seeing which competitor owns which part of the map tells you where you can realistically take share.

Averages across a territory are honest

Average rank and top-3 coverage across a fixed grid are comparable month to month. A single-point rank is too noisy to build a report on.

FAQ

Local rank tracking, answered

How is a local rank tracker different from a normal rank tracker?+

A conventional rank tracker answers 'where does this site rank for this keyword?' — a question with one answer. A local rank tracker has to answer 'where does this business rank for this keyword, from where?', because in local search the answer depends on the searcher's position. The location is part of the query, so it has to be part of the measurement.

What area should I scan?+

The area you actually serve and would accept a job from. A grid much wider than your real catchment fills up with red pins that do not mean anything — you were never going to rank there and you may not want to. Match the grid to the service area, then widen it as you grow.

Does this work for service-area businesses without a storefront?+

Yes, and it is arguably more useful for them. A service-area business has no single address that represents its market, so a grid across the territory is a far better description of reach than a rank measured at the registered address.

How many keywords should I track?+

Start with the handful that actually convert — the service plus the city, and the two or three variants customers really type. Tracking fifty keywords produces a lot of data and very few decisions.

Can I track competitors too?+

Each scan captures the businesses Google returned at every grid point, so you can see who is holding the areas where you are weak. That is usually more actionable than your own rank alone.

Track the territory, not just the pin.

Run a grid scan across your service area and see how far your rankings actually reach.
